Tyrell Malacia scored an own goal as Manchester United drew 2-2 with Sevilla in the Europa League and the defender has been criticised by Paul Scholes and Peter Schmeichel
Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Peter Schmeichel have laid into Tyrell Malacia after he made a “sloppy” error which sparked a “disaster” collapse against Sevilla in the Europa League.
United look set to comfortably win the first leg of their quarter-final clash 2-0 thanks to a first-half brace from Marcel Sabitzer. However, they conceded two late own goals as Sevilla rescued a draw to leave the tie hanging in the balance heading into next week’s second leg.
And Malacia was responsible for Sevilla’s first goal after failing to clear a cross. The left-back let the ball run to Jesus Navas, whose shot was deflected past goalkeeper David de Gea by Malacia.
“The second half was a complete disaster, really,” Scholes told BT Sport. “Malacia should have dealt with that first goal at the source and he didn’t, then from then on it was a really difficult night.
“En-Nesyri was a bit of a handful when he came on, he looked good in the air, but Malacia has to deal with that. He can’t let the ball bounce, he has to come and just get rid of it and he’s just unaware of the danger behind him – that’s where the danger is.
“It’s an easy ball, just go and swing your right foot at it. You can’t afford to let that bounce.

“Maybe he thinks it’s going to skid on but from then on it just seemed to go from bad to worse for United. Injuries, suspensions, then they get the second goal, it’s not a great second half.”
Fellow United legend Schmeichel also ripped into Malacia for his error, branding it “sloppy” and “terrible”. He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “This is what I have been fearing.
“Sloppy. What is Malacia doing? Navas crosses the ball and it comes off Malacia and De Gea and into the back of the net. What a terrible goal to concede in a game where Man United were in control.”
