New Manchester City signing Manuel Akanji has recently made headlines after opening up about his childhood as a Manchester United supporter.
The Swiss international, who made a £15million switch to the Etihad Stadium from Borussia Dortmund on deadline day, revealed that he no longer supports his boyhood club after reaching a certain level as a professional footballer.
In an interview with Blick Sport, Akanji admitted that he was a Manchester United fan growing up but that he does not support the Red Devils anymore.

He explained that as a player, you play against such clubs and don’t support them like you did. Akanji also clarified that although he had mentioned his goal of playing for the best club in the world, it was not a declaration of his desire to join Manchester United specifically.
Despite his past allegiances, Akanji has now embarked on a new chapter in his career as a Manchester City player.

The 27-year-old is expected to bolster the City back-line alongside Ruben Dias following the departures of Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling. Akanji made his debut in City’s 4-0 win over Sevilla in the Champions League, earning praise from manager Pep Guardiola for his performance.
Guardiola spoke highly of Akanji, commending the defender’s focus, attention and ability to read spaces. The City boss also noted that Akanji possesses qualities similar to Aymeric Laporte and can break the lines with a pass.
With John Stones and Laporte currently out injured, Akanji’s arrival has come at an opportune time for City, who will face a busy schedule in the coming months with domestic and European fixtures.
One fixture that will undoubtedly draw attention is the Manchester derby, with City set to face off against their local rivals United in under three weeks’ time.

While Akanji may have supported United in his youth, his focus will undoubtedly be on helping his current team secure the three points. As he continues to settle in at the Etihad, Akanji will be eager to make a positive impact and contribute to City’s quest for silverware this season.
